Jervois’s Kilembe Area Properties comprise 5 exploration licences (“ELs”) totaling 708 km2 of highly prospective land in the Kasese and Bunyangabu Districts, both bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (“DRC”). The licences are in an area ranked by the Geological Survey of Finland (“GTK”) as the number one area for cobalt mineral exploration in Uganda.
Four of the ELs are approximately 25 kms north and 25 kms south respectively, and are on trend with, the former producing Kilembe mine, which was operated by the Canadian base metals company, Falconbridge between 1956 and 1977. During this period, it produced approximately 16 million tonnes of ore grading 2.0% copper and 0.17% cobalt (non NI 43-101 compliant). The mineralization at and around the Kilembe mine is volcanogenic massive sulphide (“VMS”) in nature.
JERVOIS OWNS 5 EXPLORATION LICENCES AT THE KILEMBE AREA TOTALING 708 KM2
Jervois Work Programme
During 2018, prior to the merger with Jervois, an extensive exploration programme was implemented at the Kilembe area properties. This involved focused airborne geophysics within EL 1674 and EL 1674 (figure below). The surveys were conducted using the helicopter-borne VTEM B-Field and horizontal magnetic gradiometer. The surveys were flown at 100 metre spacing. VTEM was specifically chosen for its effectiveness at identifying buried exploration targets that possess a similar signature to the VMS style Copper-Cobalt deposits at the past producing Kilembe Mine. Upon completion of the airborne surveys, exploration included: target validation; mapping; rock chip sampling; soil sampling; and, drilling.
The soil sampling showed several coincidental geochemical anomalies for Copper which were associated with the high priority anomalies from the VTEM Survey (figure below). Exploration included mapping, rock chip sampling, soil sampling and drilling in 2018. During 2018, 7 drill holes were completed at the Kilembe area within EL 1674 to test a series of high-priority conductors identified from the VTEM airborne survey as well as a coincidental copper in soil anomaly. Whilst there were no significant assay intercepts the presence of base metal sulphides were detected. Specifically, sphalerite, galena (zinc and lead sulphides) and chalcopyrite in the core taken from the 7 drill holes confirmed the potential to discover additional VMS deposits along strike of the historic Kilembe mine.
In 2019 focus shifted to the new gold-copper discovery on the southern tenements.
KILEMBE AREA VTEM SURVEYS
Current Work Programme
Recent work conducted by Jervois in 2019 included target validation as well as prospecting. As a result of the current work programme, surficial copper-gold showings have been discovered within the Jervois licences, named Eagle, Senator and Bond. At Eagle, rock chip samples include showings of 37.8 percent (“%”) copper (“Cu”) and 18.2 grams per tonne gold (“g/t Au”). Senator has showings up to 7.8% Cu and 16.3 g/t Au (including 10 samples > 5.0 g/t Au) and Bond has showings up to 41g/t Au. Jervois cautions that rock chip samples are by their nature selective and are not necessarily indicative of the general geology or grade within the property.
Follow-up Phase 1 diamond drilling on the gold-copper surface targets has resulted in 17 drillholes intercepting significant mineralization up to 9.90m @ 1.37 g/t Au from 29m including 0.45m @ 9.98 g/t Au; 0.1 % Cu from 34.05m and 1.90m @ 3.59 g/t Au from 37.0m.
Subsequently, an extensive ground exploration program is in progress at Kilembe Area. Teams are mobilised and the exploration programme includes:
- Target Validation (including prospecting and the collection of rock grab and soil samples);
- Mapping, prospecting and soil and rock chip sampling; and
- Ground geophysics (Ground Magnetic survey).
- Drilling on new surface targets and follow-up of recent drilling intercepts with the aim of defining controls on gold and copper occurrences.
- If there is one VMS style deposit, there are likely more in the neighbourhood.
- The success of the Historic Kilembe Mine demonstrates the high potential of surrounding concessions.
- Targeting discovery of additional World Class Co-Cu deposits is priority.
